An innovative and groundbreaking master’s program in Law and Gender (LAWGEM) at the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade, is scheduled to commence in the academic year 2024/2025. This program represents a pioneering effort within the region and globally, aiming to systematically and comprehensively incorporate multidisciplinary, gender-sensitive perspectives into the legal studies curriculum. The integration of gender into all legal disciplines is vital for fostering an equitable legal system that recognizes and addresses the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities. By critically examining the interplay between law and gender, this program will empower future and current legal professionals to advocate for equitable policies and practices that challenge traditional notions of justice. Furthermore, as we witness a concerning backlash against gender equality initiatives in various spheres, it becomes increasingly essential to equip legal practitioners with the necessary tools to respond effectively and uphold the rights of all individuals.
The master’s program, delivered in English, will be accessible to students with backgrounds in law, social sciences, and humanities. Graduates will attain the title of Master of Laws in Law and Gender.
The objectives of this program include equipping students with essential knowledge and skills to engage in both legal and non-legal roles. These roles will be focused on gender mainstreaming across various areas, including law-making, judicial implementation, governmental decision-making, and policy development related to economics, social security, media, culture, and the academic fields of law and social sciences.
